ASSESSMENT, PREVENTION AND ALLEVIATION OF PAIN AND DISTRESS IN LABORATORY ANIMALS WORKSHOP
8th-10th April 2019 | Comparative Biology Centre, Newcastle University
This workshop will provide an up-to-date review of the assessment, prevention and alleviation of pain and distress in laboratory animals. The workshop will be of interest to veterinarians, animal technicians, research scientists, and members of ethics committees. Seminars will be extensively illustrated with video material and ample time provided for discussion. Although greatest emphasis will be given to rodents, the general approaches discussed are applicable to all laboratory species, and specific case-studies will include a wide range of species. Interactive sessions will incorporate practical use of scoring schemes, and scenario-based problems in pain management.
The topics covered will include:
Current concepts of animal welfare and our understanding of pain and distress
Objective measures of pain and distress in animals and their interpretation
Practical Implementation of cage side and clinical assessment schemes in rats, mice and rabbits
Analgesic techniques, pharmacology of common analgesic drugs and potential interactions of analgesics and research procedures. Factors influencing the selection of an appropriate analgesic regimen
Adverse effects of pain and distress on experiments
Peri-operative care and prevention of pain and distress
